VAMPY, FULL LIPS ARE JUST A GIF TUTORIAL AWAY FROM BEING YOUR NEW SIGNATURE LOOK

It’s a Kardashian world and we’re just living in it. These days, it’s impossible to walk into a conversation about beauty without the Kardashian-Jenner klan being mentioned (that’s some A+ contouring, you guys). However, our favourite of the bunch is easily Kylie. The youngest of the sisters, she also appears to be the one who is constantly ridden with angst, and we’re into it. Recently, she’s been under fire for her ever-growing lips (surely by people who don’t understand how makeup works). Earlier this summer, we showed you how to achieve a Kylie-inspired nude pout for day, and now you can get the same pillow-like lips in a vampy red. Check out the step-by-step tutorial below. Products used: M.A.C Lip Pencil in “Cherry”, Sephora Luster Matte Lip Colour in “Scarlet”, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Anti-Feathering Clear Liner.
Step 1: Lip balm, a makeup artist’s must-have product, is necessary for this look. Apply your lip balm of choice to your lips before you begin. For this look you’ll use a lot of lip liner, matte lipstick and generally more product than you would for a daytime look, so to ensure your lips stay hydrated, make sure to coat both top and bottom lips evenly.
Step 2: Outline your top lip, concentrating on the cupid’s bow, and bottom lip with an anti-feathering pencil to prevent the colour from bleeding. There’s nothing worse that lipstick that ends up on your chin at the end of the day. Vibrant liquid lipsticks can often smudge around the corners and anti-feathering liners will prevent that from happening.
Step 3: Here’s the time to put those high school art classes to good use. Line the lips with lip liner by slightly curving around the edges of your cupid’s bow and just outside the borders of the bottom lip. You’ll want to make sure the borders you’re creating still look natural by not straying too far from outside the top and bottom lip. Once finished, make sure to fill in your soon-to-be voluminous lips with lip liner. Think of this as the makeup version of drawing within the lines.
Step 4: An artist is only as good as his or her tools, right? Make sure to use an angled lip brush to apply liquid lipstick to both lips. This will ensure you apply an even amount to the corners of your mouth so that your lips look even and one colour.
Step 5: Made a mistake? Don’t worry. Simple apply makeup remover to a q-tip or brush to remove any unnecessary product. Then apply a concealer over top of smudged areas and no one will ever know.
Step 6: Use a flat, thick lip brush to highlight your cupid’s bow with a little bronzer and apply dark shadow under the bottom lip to create definition. By highlighting the cupid’s bow, you’re pushing the top lip’s edges forward and by applying a subtle shadow to the bottom you’re tricking the eye into thinking that it’s naturally full.
Voila! You have a very beautiful (and very real) voluptuous pout.

GOLDEN GLOBES 2015 BEAUTY: THE 13 BEST HAIR AND MAKEUP LOOKS FROM THE NIGHT

Awards season officially kicked off last week with the People’s Choice Awards but last night the season went into high gear with the 2015 Golden Globes. Often referred to as the Oscars-Lite (okay, maybe no one actually says that), we’re actually always partial to the Globes because they offer us the first peek into the beauty trends that we’ll be seeing on the red carpet this year. The biggest trend we spotted last night? Matching! Whether it was in the form of red lips that perfectly matched a red dress, a la Viola Davis, Heidi Klum and Lena Dunham, or a monochromatic head-to-toe look, like the one on Girls‘ Zosia Mamet, it seems that the best way to choose your makeup these days is by looking down at your outfit. When it came to hair, we have to say we were pleasantly surprised. Between Lupita Nyong’o‘s grown-out tresses to Jessica Chastain and Reese Witherspoon giving us perfect side-swept ‘dos, and Emily Blunt‘s pretty halo braid updo, there was some great hair porn happening at the 2015 Golden Globes. Some stars went soft with their makeup, like our February cover girl Anna Kendrick, who walked (maybe floated?) down the red carpet looking angelically dewy, as well as Sienna Miller who accentuated her always-perfect beachy waves with bronzed skin and a subtle bronze smoky eye. And then there was Jennifer Lopez, who uh, did the opposite of that. Big hair, chunky highlights, lots of gloss and maybe all the eye shadow in the world probably wouldn’t have been a great look for anyone else but somehow, we’re into it on J.Lo (so sue us). Browse the pics below and see the best 2015 Golden Globes beauty looks.

CRITICS’ CHOICE AWARDS 2015: SEE OUR TOP 16 RED CARPET PICKS

It’s been less than a week since Sunday’s stellar Golden Globes, but the gussied up celebrities at last night’s Critics’ Choice Awards 2015 proved that there are still plenty of outstanding red carpet looks in store for us. After just a few hours of announcing this year’s Oscar nominees, award contenders and red carpet mainstays showed up dressed to the nines. And while many people believed that Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie were snubbed from this year’s Oscar nominations, the actresses definitely won us over in the wardrobe department. Leaving their usual LBDs at home, the two worked sultry outfits, with Jolie in a Grecian-inspired silver Versace gown, and Aniston in a two-button tuxedo (sans shirt and bra) by Gucci. White seems to be the developing 2015 red carpet trend, with many stars once again opting for the crisp shade. Gone Girl’s Rosamund Pike wore white again, in a whimsical Valentino Haute Couture dress. Meanwhile, Marion Cotillard’s ensemble may be giving us a case of déjà-vu (see Jennifer Lawrence), but the two-time Oscar nominee added edge to her Dior ball gown with her hair slicked back. Jessica Chastain was also a vision in white, working a new silhouette in a Cheongsam-inspired gown by Antonio Berardi. Which best-dressed A-list star on the Critics’ Choice Awards 2015 red carpet deserves your vote?

What I wore this week: the silk shirt

Gripped by a most atypical enthusiasm for sales shopping, I was last week exhorting you to buy a long-sleeved shift dress, this being an item from last season (and therefore discounted) which will be just as useful, and look just as current, in this new year of ours. Arguably I should leave it there and move on, because I am after all endlessly banging on about newness and relevance and how if you don’t keep up with fashion you turn into the visual equivalent of that tedious person who starts their sentences with “As I always say.” (If you always say it, say something else.) But there is a second sales bargain to be bagged right now: the silk shirt. When I say silk shirt, I mean silk shirt, not blouse. Specifically, a sharp-edged collar, straightforward buttons and a slimmed-down silhouette based on a classic man’s shirt. But silk, which makes it different from a cotton shirt: slippery and sensuous where cotton is crisp and perky. (A note on jewellery. Those chunky crystal necklaces that look great with cotton shirts are wrong here. You need something delicate.) You know this shirt. It’s the go-to look of the hot professional female right now. It’s slick and approachable; it works brilliantly with tailored trousers, knee-length skirts, jeans. In other words, it works with the kind of clothes you already own and wear, rather than being a hard-to-wear purchase. But what makes the silk shirt the perfect target for your sales shopping hit list is that what you are searching for is very simple, which makes the chance of getting hot and distracted and hungry and coming home with totally the wrong thing less likely. (Although, hey, it happens to the best of us. Don’t beat yourself up.) You want no detailing. One colour: either a bedroomy camisole shade (blush, dove grey, ivory) or something flattering like black or navy. Leave your magpie tendencies at home for the day: crystal studs on the collar, embroidered motifs, pin tucks are not charming details. Keep looking until you find the simplest, plainest version. You’ll find it. I know you will. Because the kind of woman who wears this shirt nails this stuff.
